We are a second generation, family-owned full service marina with active third generation participation. With only one previous owner, Sound Boat Works Ltd. has a rich history, steeped in tradition and familial pride. In 1973, John and Ruth Shipman purchased a wooden boat building business. Over time, with the help of their son Gerry and his wife Mary, they transformed it into the full service marina that it is today.
The amenities are modern though the exterior is not, all adding to the charm and authentic feel of a working boatyard. Modern technology and the confidence of a well trained and experienced staff provide you with all you need to enjoy your boat and Georgian Bay.
The marina is definitely a “boaters” marina. Customers love to be in their boats, whether power or sail, and out on the waters of Georgian Bay. Yet, there is a camaraderie that has developed over time, creating a real family-like feel amongst our customers. As a new customer, you will be welcomed into the community and made to feel a part of the story.

Drive to Address: 73 Emily Street, Parry Sound
Access By Water: Sound Boat Works is located on the South East corner of the Parry Sound Harbour (approximately half a mile south of the Town Dock). If you are approaching SBW from the north you will follow the range lights through Bob’s Point (Markers P43 & P44), and continue straight towards the range lights, which are located at the marina. If you are approaching SBW from the south you will pass under the Wasauksing swing bridge and as you approach the Parry Sound Harbor Sound Boat Works is located across from Rosetta Island. To locate the docks and service dock you must enter on the north.
